Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia crowns are metal-free, light-transmitting restorations that aim to improve both the appearance and the function of your teeth.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia crowns are a dental restoration method that dentists have increasingly recommended in recent years to achieve a more aesthetic appearance and improve oral and dental function. Traditionally, crowns were mostly made of porcelain. Porcelain crowns were available in two forms, ‘porcelain fused to metal’ and ‘metal-free’, but as expectations of aesthetics grew over time, new crown materials began to be developed. Zirconia crowns are one of these and have become one of the most popular crown options in recent years.

Zirconia crowns are increasingly preferred because they are a highly effective treatment not only in terms of appearance but also in terms of oral health.

Zirconia is mainly used in dentistry because it does not cause allergies, does not corrode, is white in colour and transmits light. It is worth noting, however, that it also has uses outside dentistry.

With the porcelain crowns used in the past, aesthetics often took a back seat, as they could leave an unusual taste in the mouth and become discoloured. Thanks to advances in medical technology and new research in oral and dental health, these drawbacks have now been overcome. Zirconia crowns have become increasingly popular because they are more durable than other types, do not leave a metallic taste in the mouth, and are white and light-transmitting.

How long does zirconia crown treatment take?

The main feature that sets zirconia ceramic treatment apart from other methods is that it can be completed in a short time. Dental specialists generally consider 5 days sufficient for zirconia ceramic treatment, so there is no need to wait long for an aesthetic smile.

What are the advantages of zirconia crowns?

Metal-supported crowns transmit very little light, which over time can cause a dark line to appear along the gums. Zirconia, by contrast, transmits more light and is white in colour, so it does not cause darkening of the gums over time.

With metal-supported crowns, aesthetics are not the main priority. Zirconia, on the other hand, lets light pass through, so it does not give the teeth the dull appearance that can develop over time. Because it is closer to the natural tooth, it provides a healthier, more translucent and more natural look.
