About the department
The Infectious Diseases unit deals with diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites in any part of the body in adults.
The unit carries out the work needed to control, monitor and minimise hospital-acquired infections, and provides training on this subject for patients, their families and relevant staff. The informed, appropriate and effective use of antibiotics also plays a key role in infection control.
A very wide range of diseases falls within the field of infectious diseases, including hepatitis C, hepatitis B, meningitis, urinary tract infections and diarrhoeal illnesses.
