About the department
Like all other departments of our hospital, the Anaesthesiology and Reanimation Department takes part in routine training and meetings as part of continuous orientation. Types of Anaesthesia
During surgery, you will be given medicines called anaesthetics to relieve the sensation of pain. Before the operation, an anaesthesiologist will decide which anaesthetic medicines you will receive. Your doctor will review your health and medical history to plan the right type of anaesthesia for your operation.
There are several forms of anaesthesia. The type you receive depends on the type of surgery and your state of health. Sedatives (to induce sleep) and analgesics (to relieve pain) are also used as part of the anaesthesia process. The types of anaesthesia are:
Local Anaesthesia
Local anaesthetics are agents given to stop the sensation of pain in a specific part of the body. You remain conscious while under local anaesthesia. For minor operations, local anaesthesia can be given by injection into the area or applied so that it is absorbed through the skin. When a large area needs to be numbed, or when a local anaesthetic injection does not reach deep enough, doctors use other types of anaesthesia.
Regional Anaesthesia
Regional anaesthesia is used to numb a particular part of the body during surgery. Local anaesthetic is usually injected around the nerves responsible for sensation in that part of the body. There are several types of regional anaesthesia.
