About the department
Cardiology is the branch of medicine that deals with diseases of the heart and circulatory system. The heart’s main job is to pump blood around the body. If, for various reasons, the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, heart failure develops.
Echocardiography
This is an examination of the heart using a special ultrasound device. It is an essential diagnostic method for detecting structural and functional problems caused by heart diseases such as an enlarged heart, heart failure and heart valve disease.
Holter ECG (Rhythm Holter)
This is a device that records the heart rhythm over 24 hours. It is fitted to the patient, who then goes home, and the recordings are analysed after 24 hours. It is an important test for detecting heart rhythm disorders and assessing the risk of heart attack in cardiovascular disease.
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (BP Holter)
This is a device that measures and records blood pressure at regular intervals over 24 hours. It is fitted to the patient, who then goes home; after 24 hours it is removed and the recordings are analysed. It is considered the most accurate method of measuring blood pressure.
Exercise Stress Test
An exercise stress test assesses heart health during physical activity. The heart’s performance, blood pressure and ECG readings are measured during exercise. The test is used to diagnose coronary artery disease, measure the heart’s capacity and help plan treatment. After the test, your doctor will review the results and draw up an appropriate treatment plan.
